Police officer killed by truck during liquor smuggling operation in Dewas

Khategaon police station in-charge Dilip Puri died after being run over by a vehicle suspected of carrying illicit alcohol.

A police station in-charge was killed on the Harda-Nemawar highway in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district during an operation against illegal liquor transportation on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, according to ANI.

The deceased, identified as 2007-batch Sub-Inspector Dilip Puri, was leading a team to verify intelligence regarding an illegal alcohol consignment. The incident occurred between 1 am and 2 am.

Reports indicate that the truck driver had stopped to drink water when Puri reached the spot to apprehend him. Following a scuffle, the driver allegedly attempted to flee with the vehicle, causing the rear wheel to run over Puri.

Dewas Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Mishra said that more than five teams, including in-charges from Nemawar, Kannod, and Satwas, had been formed to intercept the shipment. The SP confirmed that an Eicher truck was seized and more than 1,800 litres of alcohol without purchase bills were recovered.

The driver has been arrested, and Rahul Jaiswal of Harda has been identified in connection with the suspected smuggling network. Police are investigating the involvement of individuals in the logistics and the source and destination of the consignment.

An investigation is currently underway to establish the full extent of the network and the financial involvement of those involved.
