Bihar CM asks income-tax payers to surrender free electricity benefit

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said the money saved could support the development of the state.

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has urged income-tax payers and financially well-off residents to voluntarily give up their entitlement to 125 units of free electricity. He made the appeal while addressing the Pataliputra National Youth Parliament-2.0 in Patna on Sunday, according to a report by The Economic Times.

Choudhary stated that the Bihar government spends approximately Rs 23,000 crore every year on electricity subsidies. He noted that the annual subsidy amount ranges between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000 per household.

The chief minister said the government currently provides 125 units of free electricity to consumers regardless of their economic background. He requested households that can afford to pay their electricity bills to surrender the benefit to contribute towards the growth of Bihar.

Addressing the gathering, Choudhary said the younger generation, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha, has a responsibility in shaping the future of India. He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making India a developed country by 2047.

The event was attended by Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari, MP Shambhavi Choudhary, and youth parliament founder Sayan Kunal.
