Doctors in Odisha remove metallic nail from 10-year-old girl's airway

A multidisciplinary medical team at KIMS in Bhubaneswar successfully performed a rigid bronchoscopy to retrieve the object from the child's right bronchus.

A team of doctors at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bhubaneswar successfully removed a metallic nail from the airway of a 10-year-old girl from Koraput district, according to the Deccan Chronicle.

The child had accidentally inhaled the item, which was used for nail art, two days before arriving at the hospital. Medical imaging showed the nail was lodged in the right bronchus.

Specialists from the ENT and Anaesthesiology departments performed a rigid bronchoscopy under general anaesthesia to extract the object. The procedure used a specialised tube-like instrument to reach the affected airway.

The medical team was led by Dr Manas Ranjan Rout and included Dr Satyanjaya Sahoo, Dr Sneha, Dr Manisha Mallick, Dr Sangram Keshari Das, Dr Supriya Kar, and Dr Anjali Kumari.

The intervention was completed without complications. The girl responded well to the procedure and was moved to a hospital ward for further observation, hospital authorities said.
