MP police station in-charge killed by truck carrying illicit liquor

Sub-Inspector Dilip Puri died after a vehicle allegedly transporting illegal alcohol ran over him in Dewas district.

A police officer was killed in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district late on Sunday night after a truck allegedly carrying illegal liquor ran over him, according to reports from The Pioneer and The Times of India.

Dilip Puri, the 2007-batch Sub-Inspector and in-charge of Khategaon police station, was leading five special teams to intercept a vehicle suspected of smuggling alcohol from Harda to Gujarat via Indore.

Dewas Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Mishra said the team located the truck parked by the highway divider at around 1.30 am on Monday.

When Puri ordered the driver to exit the vehicle, a scuffle allegedly occurred and the driver attempted to flee, causing the truck's rear wheel to run over the officer.

The driver abandoned the vehicle at Sandalpur and fled, while police recovered 1,800 litres of Indian-made foreign liquor in 208 boxes from the truck.

The police have arrested the driver, identified as Harda resident Rahul Jaiswal, and formed a special investigating team (SIT) to probe the smuggling operation and the circumstances of the death.
