Delhi traders report business disruptions following INDIA bloc rally
The Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh and CTI expressed concerns over economic losses and disrupted festive shopping after the November 1 rally.
The INDIA bloc rally held at Ramlila Maidan on November 1 disrupted wholesale markets, transport operations, and festive shopping in Delhi, according to reports by India Today, The Hawk, and ANI.
Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) Chairman Brijesh Goyal claimed that business losses could reach between Rs 10,000 crore and Rs 12,000 crore. Goyal stated that approximately 80 per cent of shops in major markets surrounding Ramlila Maidan remained closed due to traffic restrictions and crowd concerns.
The Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh (Regd.) issued a statement saying the rally affected business activity, customer footfall, and the livelihoods of traders, employees, and transporters. The traders' body noted that disruptions to traffic and routine operations could impact business during the festive period ahead of Diwali.
CTI Vice President Rahul Adlakha said traders from outside Delhi cancelled visits and those with open shops remained idle due to a lack of buyers. Goyal noted that around 20 to 22 major markets, including Sadar Bazar and Chandni Chowk, contain approximately three lakh shops.
The Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh acknowledged that the rally brought public attention to the problems of the business community and the importance of wholesale markets. However, the association urged authorities to consider the business calendar and festive seasons when planning future large-scale political gatherings.
The CTI said it would compile market-wise data to assess the total financial impact and has raised concerns regarding compensation for affected businesses.
