Pro-Kannada activists visit Bengaluru IT firms to collect employment data

Activists are approaching technology parks to gather recruitment information despite warnings from Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

Pro-Kannada activists have begun visiting technology parks and IT companies in Bengaluru to gather data on recruitment practices, according to Moneycontrol. The move comes amid a debate regarding employment opportunities for Kannadigas in the private sector.

The Kannada Rakshana Vedike (KRV) has launched a state-wide initiative to evaluate how many Kannadigas are employed in private companies. The organisation intends to dispatch teams to manufacturing and technology firms this month to collect data and has warned it will protest if companies refuse to provide the information.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged Kannada organisations not to target IT-BT companies or take matters into their own hands. He stated that the state government will investigate claims of discrimination against local candidates and take action where necessary.

The debate follows social media allegations that Kannada-speaking candidates face disadvantages during recruitment. One video showed a woman claiming that applicants mentioning Kannada on resumes were rejected in favour of those from other states.

The government is also considering a mandate for private companies to display the Karnataka flag on their premises, with an official order expected this month. Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries, Factories and Other Establishments Bill, 2024, remains on hold following industry objections.

Deputy CM G Parameshwara said companies receiving government support should offer roles to qualified Kannadigas based on their skills. Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj S Tangadagi also opposed discrimination based on a candidate's mother tongue.
