Jailer 2 becomes first Tamil film to cross ₹800 crore worldwide

The Rajinikanth starrer surpassed the lifetime collections of Bollywood films PK and Chhaava after reaching the milestone on Sunday.

The film Jailer 2 became the first Tamil cinema production to achieve a ₹800 crore gross worldwide on Sunday, according to the Hindustan Times. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the movie has surpassed the lifetime hauls of Bollywood blockbusters PK and Chhaava.

The film earned ₹11.50 crore net in India on its 18th day in theatres. This brought its total domestic collection to ₹456 crore net, or ₹533 crore gross, making it the only Tamil film to earn ₹450 crore in India.

Jailer 2 has also earned close to $29 million overseas, particularly in North America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. This brings the worldwide gross to ₹808 crore.

The film is the only Tamil movie to earn at least ₹60 crore in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh-Telangana. It was produced by Sun Pictures and features Rajinikanth as 'Tiger' Muthuvel Pandian.

The cast includes Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, and Rithvik, with new additions S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan, and Jatin Sarna.

High-profile cameos appear from Hrithik Roshan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Jackie Shroff.

Earnings for the film may be affected when Ramayana is released this Friday. However, current momentum may see the film aim for the ₹850 crore mark.
