Tamil Nadu opens first healthy and hygienic food street in Tiruchy
Health Minister KG Arunraj inaugurated the facility on Race Course Road at Kajamalai featuring 39 trained mobile food cart vendors.
Health Minister KG Arunraj inaugurated Tamil Nadu’s first healthy and hygienic food street at Kajamalai's Race Course Road on Sunday, according to The New Indian Express. The initiative aims to provide clean and affordable food to people who rely on eateries.
A total of 39 vendors were chosen during the first phase and received training in safe food preparation. These vendors operate mobile carts equipped with food vending machines and have been provided with subsidised loans through the District Industries Centre.
The vendors acquired food carts worth Rs 59 lakh using loans and personal contributions. Meanwhile, the Tiruchy Corporation spent Rs 50 lakh on infrastructure such as lighting, parking, drinking water, and an open-air amphitheatre.
Arunraj stated that a smart card facility has been introduced to allow customers to buy food using a single card. He also noted that the state government announced in June that this initiative would be rolled out in six districts, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, and Tiruchy.
The food street will be open every day from 4 pm to 11 pm. The inauguration was attended by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister S Ramesh, Collector Pratik Tayal, and several other officials and MLAs.
