Tamil Nadu to introduce weekly ethnic wear day for government employees

Tamil development minister A Rajmohan announced the plan to support weavers and promote traditional attire during celebrations in Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu government plans to implement a weekly ethnic wear day for state government employees, according to The Times of India. Tamil development minister A Rajmohan made the announcement during Tamil Nadu Day celebrations in Chennai on Sunday.

Rajmohan said the initiative aims to promote traditional clothing and support weavers. He noted that he suggested government officers and staff wear dhoti and shirt for one day every week after observing the chief minister wearing a silk dhoti and shirt.

The minister stated the new dress code will include his cabinet colleagues. He also mentioned plans to establish a Tamil Sangam at the Secretariat, led by the chief minister, to promote Tamil art and literature.

During the event, minister Aadhav Arjuna said Tamil Nadu should have a separate state flag for the chief minister to hoist on important occasions. Rajmohan added that efforts to organise a World Tamil Conference will be made soon.

The DMK issued a statement claiming that November 1 should be observed as Martyrs’ Day rather than Tamil Nadu Day. The party noted that while November 1 marks the 1956 formation of the state, July 18 marks the 1967 renaming of the state to Tamil Nadu.
