Tamil Nadu government to consider separate state flag

Minister Rajmohan said the proposal follows the official recognition of November 1 as Tamil Nadu Day.

Tamil Nadu Minister Rajmohan announced on Sunday that the state government is looking into the possibility of adopting a unique flag, similar to those used by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. According to reports from ANI and The News Mill, the move follows the official designation of November 1 as Tamil Nadu Day.

Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna also called for a separate flag during a meeting to honour Tamil scholars. He suggested that a law should be passed to enable the flag to be hoisted at every house and that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay should hoist it on November 1 and July 18.

Arjuna stated that the flag should give prominence to the Tamil language and hold a status equal to the national flag. He also advocated for a two-language policy, suggesting that children of officials, including MLAs and IAS officers, should study in Tamil medium.

Minister Rajmohan noted that Chief Minister Joseph Vijay would soon review a proposal to make November 1 a public holiday throughout the state. The state was originally established as Madras State on November 1, 1956, following linguistic reorganisation.

The renaming of the state to Tamil Nadu was officially achieved on July 18, 1967, after a unanimous resolution in the Madras State Legislative Assembly led by then Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.
