Wizz Air flight diverted to Budapest after mid-air bomb threat
A Hungarian fighter jet escorted the London to Sofia aircraft to Budapest for emergency security inspections.
A Wizz Air flight travelling from London Luton Airport to Sofia was diverted to Budapest on Monday following a mid-air bomb threat, according to reports from BBC News and Bhaskar English.
The Airbus A321neo landed at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport at approximately 12:09 local time after the threat was received while the plane was flying over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendis stated that a Gripen fighter jet from the Hungarian Defence Forces was scrambled within minutes to escort the passenger plane to the airport.
Ruszin-Szendis said that after the jet returned to its base, police took over the situation.
Wizz Air said the aircraft taxied to a specific stand where officials conducted security checks on the passengers and the plane. The airline confirmed that the inspection was finished and no threats were found, noting that the aircraft would depart again soon.
The airline stated it is working closely with officials and maintains that the protection of its crew and passengers is its main priority.
