Suspected food poisoning at Mumbai wedding leaves many ill
Authorities are investigating an incident at a wedding in Bhandup where guests reportedly fell ill after eating milk-based sweets.
At least 27 people, including a newlywed couple, fell ill after allegedly eating food at a wedding function in Mumbai's Bhandup area on Sunday, according to reports from ANI and The News Mill.
The incident took place at the Nalanda Buddha Vihar Hall in Nahur during a function attended by between 400 and 500 guests. Civic officials stated that those affected had consumed kharwas, a milk-based sweet.
Dr Kailash Marskole, Medical Officer at MT Agarwal Municipal General Hospital, said 27 patients were admitted with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, and indigestion. The group included 11 women, 9 men, and 2 children.
A relative of the groom alleged that the catering staff was responsible for the incident, claiming that 30 to 40 people began showing symptoms after returning home. The relative appealed to Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe and the Mumbai Police to ensure justice.
The FDA has collected food samples for testing to determine the cause of the contamination, according to The Tribune. All hospitalised patients are reported to be in stable condition.
The Bhandup police will register an FIR against the caterer, though no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
