Delhi bars non-BS6 vehicles from entering capital under pollution plan
Authorities have implemented restrictions on petrol and diesel vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not meet BS-VI emission standards.
The Delhi government has prohibited non-BS6 compliant petrol and diesel vehicles registered outside the capital from entering the city starting November 1, according to reports from ANI and The News Mill. The restrictions are part of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to manage winter air pollution.
The Delhi Traffic Police conducted vehicle checks at the Singhu border on November 1. Between 00:00 and 20:00 hours that day, officials checked 7,279 vehicles, resulting in 714 being turned back and 38 being impounded, the Delhi Traffic Police stated.
Under the new measures, which run until January 31, electric and CNG vehicles, as well as emergency services like ambulances and fire tenders, are exempt. The Tribune reported that parking charges at authorised facilities will also double until February 28, though Delhi Metro Rail Corporation lots are excluded.
The government has also banned outdoor civil construction and demolition that produces dust from November 1 to January 31. A more rigorous ban on all construction activities will be enforced between December 10 and January 20.
To monitor compliance, authorities are using automatic number plate recognition cameras and an AI-enabled Integrated Command and Control Centre. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has urged residents to use public transport and cooperate with the authorities to improve air quality.
