Chennai and Tiruvallur under orange alert as cyclone nears Andhra coast

Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in the region as a severe cyclonic storm moves towards the Andhra Pradesh coastline.

Chennai and Tiruvallur have been issued orange alerts for extremely heavy rainfall due to a severe cyclonic storm in the west-central Bay of Bengal, according to Urban Acres.

The weather centre in Chennai issued a bulletin on November 2 stating the storm was located approximately 180 kilometres northeast of Chennai and 160 kilometres southeast of Nellore.

The system is moving west-northwest and is expected to cross the coast between Nellore and Narasapur from late on November 2 until the early hours of November 3.

Winds measuring 100 to 110 kilometres per hour may accompany the storm during landfall.

The orange alert indicates the possibility of significant weather impacts, which could affect public services, travel, and exposed urban areas.

The bulletin also placed the Nilgiris under a yellow alert for heavy rain on November 3, while Dindigul and Theni may see heavy rain on November 5.
