First import container arrives at Vizhinjam International Seaport
The arrival of a shipment from China marks the start of direct import operations at the Kerala port.
The first import container arrived at the Vizhinjam International Seaport from Ningbo, China, on Tuesday, according to The Hindu.
The shipment, containing WPC foam boards for the Alteir Group, was booked by BS2G Logistics and Ship Chandlers Private Limited. The startup, led by Gouri Devanand and Greeshma Devanand, brought the cargo to the port.
With the start of import facilities, importers in Kerala can now unload goods directly at Vizhinjam and complete customs formalities locally. This removes the previous need to rely on other ports for incoming goods.
The development is expected to reduce time and costs for cargo movement while keeping revenue from logistics and cargo handling within the state. It is also anticipated to create jobs in sectors such as warehousing, transportation, and customs brokerage.
MLA M. Vincent attended the reception ceremony and stated that starting import operations within three months of the gateway traffic inauguration is a remarkable feat. He said that strengthening both exports and imports could help meet the developmental goals of the region.
The BS2G team noted that the shipment proves the route is viable and said more imports are already being arranged through the port.
