ICMR sanctions Rs 76 lakh for antibiotic resistance study in Paderu

The funding will support research into meropenem resistance at the Government Medical College in the tribal region of Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has sanctioned Rs 76 lakh to the Department of Microbiology at the Government Medical College in Paderu, Andhra Pradesh. According to South First, the funds will be used to study antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to meropenem, an antibiotic used for severe bacterial infections.

Meropenem is part of the carbapenem class of antibiotics that works by disrupting bacterial cell-wall formation. The research will examine how pathogenic microorganisms are developing resistance to the drug, which can make infections difficult to treat.

Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr Vishnuvardhan announced the grant on Monday, 2 November. He said securing the ICMR funding is an important achievement for the newly established medical college in the tribal region and will strengthen its research activities.

Dr Vishnuvardhan added that the grant would provide medical students with opportunities to engage in scientific research and encourage research-oriented careers. The funding is expected to strengthen the microbiology research capabilities of the institution.
