Madhya Pradesh police inspector killed by truck carrying illicit liquor in Dewas

An investigation into the incident has uncovered a smuggling network supplying liquor from Harda to Gujarat.

A Madhya Pradesh police inspector was killed on Monday in Dewas district after a truck he intercepted allegedly ran him over, according to The Hindu. Khategaon police station in-charge Dilip Puri was leading a team on the Indore-Betul highway around 1.30 a.m. following intelligence about illicit liquor being transported from Harda to Gujarat.

The incident occurred near Sandalpur when Puri asked the driver of a parked truck to step down for a search. The driver allegedly drove over a divider to flee, running over Puri and injuring constable Sohan Jaat. Puri died during treatment at a hospital.

Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra said more than 1,800 litres of illicit liquor in approximately 200 cartons were recovered from the vehicle. The liquor was found in a hidden chamber made with an additional metal surface to make the truck appear empty.

Special Director General of Police Upendra Jain said the driver, identified as Gajendra Rawat alias Akku, fled the scene and is being sought. The vehicle was provided by Kairam Singh Changod, who has been taken into custody for questioning.

Police have identified Rahul Jaiswal, a Congress functionary and Khategaon Assembly seat in-charge, as a key accused who allegedly ran the network. Jaiswal and associate Vijay Rao have been taken into custody. Other individuals identified include Patendra Jaiswal, Manish Jaiswal, Mohin Jaiswal, and Rahul Jaiswal.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced financial aid of Rs 1 crore for Puri's family and a sub-inspector post for his wife. A special investigation team has been formed to probe the case.
