Punjab Roadways and Punbus contract workers announce three-day strike

Contractual employees plan the agitation from November 16, alleging the state government failed to meet previous assurances regarding service regularisation.

Contractual employees of Punjab Roadways, Punbus and the Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) have announced a three-day strike starting November 16, according to The Tribune.

The Punjab Roadways, Punbus and PRTC contract workers union stated the agitation is a response to the state government failing to fulfil assurances made during previous negotiations.

Union president Resham Singh Gill and general secretary Shamsher Singh Dhillon said employees have lost patience with repeated assurances that lacked follow-up action.

The union alleged that despite a meeting on October 29 where the government promised to place Punbus service rules before the Cabinet, the proposal has not been taken up.

Other demands include bringing outsourced staff into direct contracts with the department and the withdrawal of police cases filed against workers during earlier protests.

The workers have planned a protest in Dirba on November 5, opposition to government political rallies from November 8, and depot-wide protests on November 10. The union warned the November 16 strike could be extended indefinitely if demands remain unaddressed.
