European troops to rehearse Ukraine deployment in case of peace deal

Nearly 3,000 military personnel from 12 nations will participate in a rehearsal in Poland this month.

Britain and France will lead a military exercise to test the ability of a multinational force to deploy to Ukraine if a peace deal is reached, according to BBC News. The rehearsal, known as Exercise Koalicja, will take place in Poland from 9-22 November.

Approximately 2,800 military personnel from 12 European nations will participate across land, sea, and air. The UK will contribute 300 troops and two RAF Typhoons, which will simulate reassuring commercial aircraft once Ukrainian skies reopen.

Western officials stated that any force sent to Ukraine would not participate in offensive operations, peacekeeping, or ceasefire monitoring. The force would not operate under Nato command or on the front line, but would instead provide reassurance and assist in rebuilding armed forces.

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the exercise demonstrates that Britain, France, and allies are increasing preparations for when peace arrives in Ukraine. He noted that the force is a real entity prepared to assist once fighting ends.

Lt Gen Tom Bateman, the UK commander of the Multi National Force – Ukraine (MNF-U), said the exercise is a step toward turning political commitments into military readiness. He described the group as a capable, deployable force representing a commitment to long-term stability.

Turkey has agreed to lead a maritime mission to clear mines and allow Black Sea trade to resume. Other participating nations include Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and France.
