The state government aims to foster a defence equipment manufacturing industry through the new facility near Nellie.
The Assam Cabinet on Tuesday approved the allocation of 6,000 bighas of land near Nellie in Nagaon district to establish a Defence Park, according to ANI. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the facility is intended to build a defence equipment manufacturing industry within the state.
The Cabinet also approved changes to the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964. Under the new amendment, government employees who marry again while their current marriage is still valid will face dismissal from service. Sarma said the move seeks to penalise polygamy, promote equality, and protect women from harmful practices.
Regarding agriculture, the government sanctioned an extra Rs 200 per quintal for the current Kharif Marketing Season (KMS). This brings the rate to Rs 2,640 per quintal, up from Rs 2,569 per quintal last year, the Chief Minister noted.
The Cabinet further recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the causes of the July 2026 floods in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. Additionally, a Ropeway Development Agreement was approved with National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) to facilitate five ropeway projects for tourism and connectivity.
To improve administration, a one-time framework was endorsed to relax certain criteria for promotions and recruitment covering vacancies from 2026 to 2028. The Cabinet also approved the formation of 13 State Level Sectoral Councils to implement welfare schemes under the 'Vikshit Assam' vision.
