The 2014-batch officer submitted his resignation on Monday following his removal from the Sagar district.
IPS officer Anurag Sujania has resigned from service citing personal reasons, according to reports by The Hindu and Hindustan Times. Sujania, a 2014-batch officer, submitted his resignation on November 2, days after being transferred from his post as Sagar Superintendent of Police (SP) to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) at the police headquarters in Bhopal.
The transfer occurred on October 27, alongside the removal of Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal. This reshuffle followed a hooch tragedy in Sagar district's Banda area in September, where at least 16 people officially died after consuming spurious liquor. While unofficial estimates cited by the Times of India put the death toll at around 36, the government told the High Court that the cause of death for seven others was not clear.
A senior IPS officer confirmed the resignation and stated that the request has been forwarded to the state government. Sources in the police department told The Hindu that Sujania was upset over the transfer, noting that he believed the police had conducted a swift investigation and arrested all accused in the Sagar case.
Sujania, a native of Rajasthan, previously served as SP in Morena and Mandsaur. Former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh had previously pointed out that 24 people died in Morena in 2021 during Sujania's tenure as SP. The state government has since constituted a one-man judicial inquiry headed by retired Justice VPS Chauhan.
The State IPS Association discussed the matter with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday. The Chief Minister also convened a meeting of senior police officers to review the law and order situation and discuss curbing the liquor mafia. The government is yet to decide on the resignation.
