Kerala to launch road safety mission on November 15

Actor Mammootty will serve as brand ambassador for the initiative aimed at reducing the state's annual 3,700 road accident deaths.

The Kerala government will launch the Keralam Road Safety Mission on November 15 at the Town Hall to tackle road accident fatalities, according to Urban Acres. Transport Minister C P John announced on Wednesday that the programme will feature actor Mammootty as its brand ambassador.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan will lead the mission, with Transport Minister C P John serving as co-chairperson. The initiative will involve ministers from eight departments and will be implemented through district administrations and local self-government bodies.

The mission follows the 'Enlighten and Enforce' concept, which aims to increase public awareness of safe road use alongside stricter traffic rule enforcement. The government intends to include road safety in school curricula and will establish safe zones near hospitals, schools, and places of worship.

The programme will focus on identifying and improving accident-prone 'black spots' through better signage, road improvements, and wider zebra crossings. The minister noted that the state currently records approximately 3,700 road deaths every year.

To encourage community involvement, the government will form safe driving clubs and allow residents to provide feedback via a mobile application and website. The minister also requested support from media, political parties, and various community organisations to make road safety a shared responsibility.
