Punalur police confiscated a vehicle after surveillance footage showed it discharging waste into a drinking water project lagoon on October 4.
Police in Kollam have seized a vehicle used to illegally dump septic waste into the JICA drinking water project lagoon at Paravattam, according to The Hindu.
The incident was identified after the Punalur municipality reviewed CCTV footage following complaints from local residents about waste being dumped at night. The video showed a vehicle with registration number KL 16 L 1097 discharging waste on the night of October 4.
Punalur police located and took possession of the vehicle after receiving the footage from municipal authorities. Officials stated that legal proceedings have started against the vehicle's owner.
The Punalur municipality has placed surveillance cameras at 21 locations, including eight high-definition AI-powered cameras designed to capture registration details at night. The municipality has previously taken action against people dumping organic waste in public areas using this network.
Municipal chairperson M.A. Rajagopal said a system is in place to check camera footage every day. He added that the municipality will use heavy fines and prosecution against anyone found dumping waste illegally within municipal limits.
