NavIC capabilities grow with addition of NVS-03 satellite

The Indian Space Research Organisation says the new satellite provides coverage over India and a region extending 1500 km beyond its borders.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has added the NVS-03 satellite to NavIC, the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), towards the end of October 2026, according to The Hindu.

NVS-03 is one of five next-generation satellites intended to improve the country's satellite-based navigation capabilities.

The navigation payload on the NVS-03 satellite operates in the L1, L5 and S bands. It features an indigenous atomic clock alongside imported ones.

The satellite provides coverage for India and an area extending 1500 km past its boundaries.

The development has led to renewed debates regarding GPS versus NavIC and the importance of strengthening India's own navigation system during geopolitical tensions.
