Indian medical team saves woman injured in Mauritius shooting

A 13-member team from Hyderabad's KIMS Hospital was mobilised to Mauritius to treat a critically injured woman.

A 13-member medical team from India reached Mauritius on October 12 to treat a 27-year-old woman, Elodie Thomas, who was critically injured by a bullet, according to The Indian Express.

The shooting occurred on October 9 in a residential area south of Port Louis while Thomas was returning from work in a van. Officials alleged the bullet was fired by a police officer.

Mauritius Health Minister Anil Bachoo contacted Indian High Commissioner Anurag Srivastava on the night of October 10 to request assistance. Indian authorities then reached out to KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad.

The Indian delegation included five doctors and eight specialists and technicians. Doctors from the hospital group decided to travel to Mauritius rather than evacuate the patient to India due to the risks involved.

Neurosurgeon Dr Kapil Khandelwal said the bullet entered near the ear and crossed the parotid gland region. He noted that the priority was to avoid damage to neurological structures that could cause permanent weakness.

Dr Rakesh Jalla, head of the Indian delegation, said Thomas's health is showing massive improvement and she can take a few steps. Khandelwal stated that no neurological deficit or infection was observed following the operation.
