Delhi-Mumbai Expressway completion pushed to 2028 due to delays
The project's southern packages are facing delays, moving the full completion timeline from the original 2024 target to 2028, according to Business Today.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is expected to reach full completion by 2028, according to a report by Business Today. While the project originally aimed for a 2024 finish, unfinished southern packages have pushed the timeline back.
Road Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Rajya Sabha on March 25 that 929 km of the 1,445 km project scope was operational. This represents approximately 64 per cent of the total scope, which includes connecting spurs.
The 55 km Limkheda-Godhra section in Gujarat opened to motorists in October, as reported by DeshGujarat. However, the last gap in this segment is Package 26, located between Limkheda and the Madhya Pradesh border.
Work on Package 26, which is about 30 km long, is projected to conclude by December 2026 or January 2027. Once finished, the road will provide a continuous route from Delhi to Kharel in the Navsari district.
Delays are also noted in Packages 8, 9 and 10 between Gandeva and the Maharashtra border. DeshGujarat reported in April that these packages were 5 per cent, 10 per cent and 42-43 per cent complete, respectively.
The sanctioned cost for the project is ₹96,547 crore, with ₹77,558 crore spent by December 2025. Gadkari attributed delays primarily to contractors, and the target for the remaining sections is March 2028.
