The Government of France has awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite to Narayana Health founder and chairman Devi Shetty. According to The Hindu, the honour was presented by Marc Lamy, the Consul General of France in Bengaluru, during a ceremony at Narayana Health City on Wednesday.
Dr Shetty received the Knight of the National Order of Merit for providing vaccination and logistical assistance to the French Consulate and the wider French community in Bengaluru during the COVID-19 pandemic. The award recognises his support during a period of significant healthcare challenges.
Mr Lamy stated that the recognition celebrates Dr Shetty's generosity and unwavering support, noting that his actions reflect the spirit of solidarity and the friendship between France and India. Dr Shetty expressed his gratitude to the French government and credited the Narayana Health teams for their role in providing assistance.
Established on 3 December 1963 by French President Charles de Gaulle, the Ordre national du Mérite is France's second-highest national distinction, following the Legion of Honour. It is awarded to French and foreign nationals for distinguished service in civilian and military fields.
The order consists of five grades: Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer, and Grand Cross. The ceremony was attended by members of the French Consulate, the Narayana Health management, and the French community in Bengaluru.
