No compromise on nuclear safety with private sector entry, says AERB chief

Atomic Energy Regulatory Board Chairperson A.K. Balasubrahmanian stated that the regulator will provide an enabling environment for private players without diluting safety requirements.

Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) Chairperson A.K. Balasubrahmanian has stated that there will be no compromise on safety aspects regarding the entry of private players into India's nuclear energy sector, according to The Hindu.

Speaking on the sidelines of a two-day symposium in Thiruvananthapuram this week, Balasubrahmanian said the sector is being opened up at the right time due to the country's emerging power requirements.

The symposium on emerging frontiers in nuclear science and technology was organised by the Atomic Energy Retirees’ Association.

Balasubrahmanian said that as a regulator, the AERB will provide an "enabling environment" for private players.

He maintained that the board will not dilute regulatory and safety requirements during this process.
