Six people die in Brooklyn residential building fire
The New York City Fire Department sent more than 230 personnel to the scene near Sunset Park after the blaze broke out early Thursday.
Six people died and several others were injured after a large fire broke out in a residential building in Brooklyn, New York City, according to BBC News.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said the blaze occurred early on Thursday morning near Sunset Park, with the fire first reported at around 01:40 local time.
Emergency responders found the first and second floors of the building engulfed in flames. Four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while a male and a female were pronounced dead at a hospital, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) said.
The FDNY reported that six civilians were injured, including two people in critical condition, and three firefighters were also injured. More than 230 fire and emergency medical personnel were sent to the scene.
A crew specialising in hazardous materials was sent to the site due to the presence of a lithium-ion battery, though it was not clear if this was linked to the fire.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he was heartbroken by the deaths and asked New Yorkers to pray for the recovery of those who were injured.
