Tamil Nadu leads India in research publications and patent applications

The state topped the NITI Aayog India Science and Technology Scoreboard for both research output and patent filings.

Tamil Nadu has emerged as the leader in research publications and patent applications according to the India Science and Technology (S&T) Scoreboard launched by NITI Aayog on Tuesday, as reported by India Today.

In the 2024-25 period, Tamil Nadu recorded 44,611 research publications. Uttar Pradesh followed with 29,298 publications, while Maharashtra recorded 28,947.

Regarding patent applications, Tamil Nadu also held the top position with 16,048 filings. Maharashtra and Karnataka followed in the patent rankings, according to reports from Moneycontrol and India Today.

NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri stated that for India to advance in science and technology, states must play a more proactive part. He noted that the scoreboard would allow states to recognise their strengths and weaknesses through cooperative and competitive federalism.

NITI Aayog member (S&T) Abhay Karandikar said the platform addresses the issue of fragmented data by providing an interactive dashboard to track progress. Department of Science and Technology Secretary Umesh V Waghmare added that the scoreboard provides a state-level view for the national evidence base.

The scoreboard covers 36 states and Union Territories, including data on 1,260 higher education institutions, 356 centrally funded R&D institutions, 38,553 deep-tech startups, and 390 incubators.
