Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named Bihar captain for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026-27
The 15-year-old cricketer is set to lead the state team in their opening match against Saurashtra in Indore.
The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) has appointed 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the captain of the Bihar team for the 2026-27 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, according to Times Now. Sooryavanshi will lead the side for the first time on November 14 against Saurashtra at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
If he leads the team in the opening game, he will set a world record as the youngest captain of a T20 team in world cricket at 15 years and 232 days. This would surpass the current record held by Croatia's Zach Vukusic, who was 17 years and 311 days old.
The teenager will only participate in the first two matches of the tournament before travelling to Qatar for the 2026 Rising Stars Asia Cup. He has also been selected for the Indian team for the List A tournament, which begins on November 19.
Coach Manish Ojha described the appointment as a proud moment, noting that the player earned the role through senior-level experience. Ojha added that the decision shows Bihar cricket is moving in the right direction by providing opportunities to the new generation.
BCA President Harsh Vardhan stated that Sooryavanshi has shown maturity and confidence at a young age. The president expressed hope that the team will deliver a competitive performance under his leadership.
Suraj Kashyap has been named vice-captain for the squad. Bihar is placed in Group B alongside Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Railways, and Tamil Nadu.
