Five killed in shooting near Krakow main market square
A gunman in a vehicle targeted pedestrians in southern Poland, leaving five dead and around a dozen injured.
Five people were killed and approximately 12 others were wounded during a shooting near the main market square in Krakow on Saturday, according to Al Jazeera. The incident occurred in Poland's second-largest city, located about 250 kilometres south of Warsaw.
A Krakow police spokesperson told AFP that a man used a vehicle to fire at people in the square. Police officers neutralised the gunman, who was then taken to a hospital. The Małopolska Police confirmed the suspect was shot by officers, though his identity and condition were not immediately known.
The wounded include several police officers, according to reports from Moneycontrol. Local firefighters also stated that the perpetrator fired a gun from a moving car.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the event as a tragic shooting and said he is being updated by the Minister of the Interior. He noted that police are investigating the circumstances and the background of the attack.
President Karol Nawrocki said he is in contact with authorities and expects a full explanation. He added that the head of the National Security Bureau is travelling to Krakow as the investigation continues.
