Choti Diwali 2026 to be celebrated on November 8, Sunday

The festival, also known as Naraka Chaturdashi, will see some regions celebrate both Choti Diwali and the main Diwali festival on the same day.

Choti Diwali 2026 is scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 8, according to the Times of India. Due to the alignment of the lunar calendar, some locations may celebrate both Choti Diwali and the main Diwali festival on the same date.

As per the Hindu Panchang, the Chaturdashi Tithi begins at 10:47 am on November 7 and concludes at 11:27 am on November 8. This timing means the traditional Abhyanga Snan, a sacred oil bath, will occur on the morning of November 8.

The festival is known by various names across India, including Naraka Chaturdashi, Roop Chaudas, and Kali Chaudas. In North India, it is commonly called Choti Diwali, while in Maharashtra, the Abhyanga Snan is a key ritual. In parts of South India, Naraka Chaturdashi often serves as the main Diwali celebration.

The festival is rooted in the legend of Lord Krishna and Satyabhama defeating the demon king Narakasura. Traditions include lighting diyas, making rangoli, and preparing sweets. In Goa, large effigies of Narakasura are set ablaze in the early hours to symbolise the defeat of evil.
