Stephen Miller to become White House chief of staff

The appointment of the hardline adviser signals Donald Trump's intent to maintain his domestic agenda despite recent midterm election losses.

US President Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller as his new White House chief of staff, according to reports from the Times of India and News18. Miller, 41, will take over the position from Susie Wiles on November 9.

The move follows the Republican Party's loss of control in both chambers of Congress during the November 3 midterm elections. Miller has been a close adviser to Trump since the 2016 campaign and has served as deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser.

Trump described Miller as a trusted adviser who has been with him from the start. Miller expressed his commitment to the presidency on X, stating his mission is to fight to support the President and defend the Republic.

While Miller has not articulated a specific policy regarding India, his focus on immigration could impact Indian professionals. In fiscal 2025, India-born beneficiaries accounted for approximately 70 per cent of approved H-1B petitions.

The appointment has drawn criticism from Democrats, with incoming House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries calling Miller a dangerous extremist. Conversely, former Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz welcomed the news.

Miller's role involves managing senior personnel and coordinating policy discussions. His elevation is seen as a sign that the administration will continue its focus on mass deportation and aggressive immigration enforcement.
