Tourists and locals gathered at the historic Ghanta Ghar to celebrate the festival of lights on Sunday.
The iconic Lal Chowk in Srinagar was illuminated with lights and diyas on Sunday evening as people gathered to celebrate Diwali, according to reports by ANI, India TV and News18.
The historic Ghanta Ghar, or clock tower, was decorated with lamps and vibrant lights. Revellers lit rows of traditional earthen lamps near the tower, and the celebrations were marked by chants of 'Jai Shree Ram'.
A visitor from Gujarat told ANI that they were happy to celebrate their first Diwali in Srinagar. Another visitor from New Delhi described the atmosphere in the Union Territory as peaceful and noted that Kashmir has changed a lot.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravinder Raina shared a video from the site, describing the celebrations as historic and noting that a grand fair was being held at the packed location.
Security personnel maintained a vigil at the site and were seen participating in the tradition of lighting diyas. In other parts of the valley, Indian Army personnel stationed along the Line of Control (LoC) celebrated by lighting lamps and performing puja within their units.
