Pennsylvania family turns residential yard into themed Halloween attraction

Garrick Heim and his family have developed an interactive walk-through display called Rotten Roots in Exeter Township over five years.

A family in Exeter Township, Pennsylvania, has transformed their residential yard into an elaborate walk-through Halloween attraction called Rotten Roots, according to a Times of India report citing Berks Weekly.

The display, created by Garrick Heim and his family, has evolved over five years from a small graveyard into a themed experience featuring animatronics, a corn path, and a custom fog system.

The attraction follows a storyline developed by Heim’s wife, depicting witches commanding spiders to protect a cornfield from invading aliens.

Heim manages the technical construction, which includes sourcing corn stalks from Lancaster County and using wooden pallets and metal supports to secure large decorations.

The setup uses a centralised power system for props and a cooling arrangement connected to a fog machine to produce low-lying mist.

Visitors can interact with the display using the Fright Links feature on the Fright Maps app to trigger characters like a witch or a werewolf.

Other interactive elements include pressure-sensitive pads and motion sensors along the corn path. Heim’s stepdaughter also participates by wearing a mask to surprise visitors.

Heim intends to add a 12-foot alien to the display in the future.
