Bihar orders formal dress code for teachers and bans DJs in schools

Education Minister Mithlesh Tiwari stated that staff must wear formal attire and avoid low-standard entertainment on campus.

Bihar Education Minister Mithlesh Tiwari said on Saturday that all educational institutes in the state must follow a formal dress code for teachers and non-teaching staff. According to the Deccan Herald, the minister also expressed concern regarding the use of DJs during entertainment programmes on school campuses.

Education Department Director (Administration) Vijay Kumar Pandey issued a letter on Friday directing district officers to ensure staff attend schools in formal attire during office and teaching hours. The department noted that reports indicated staff were wearing casual clothes, such as T-shirts and jeans, despite previous instructions.

The department also banned DJ setups, disco, and other low-tier entertainment activities on school grounds. The order stated that such activities undermine the dignity of the teaching profession and the academic environment.

The letter clarified that only disciplined programmes, such as music or dance, are permitted on special occasions according to the academic calendar. The department drew a parallel to the formal dress requirements of the Supreme Court of India and the Patna High Court.

District education officers have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with these new directives to maintain discipline within school premises.
