Assam Minister Biswajit Daimary clarifies remarks on ULFA
Daimary stated his comments were made in the context of the Motak community's sentiments and sacrifices for the state.
Assam Cabinet Minister Biswajit Daimary clarified his recent remarks regarding the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), stating he was expressing the views of the Motak community, according to The Assam Tribune.
Daimary said his comments referred to the thoughts of the Motak community towards Assam and the sacrifices they made for the state. He claimed several people from the community lost their lives for the Assamese cause.
The clarification follows controversy over remarks Daimary allegedly made at a Matak Yuva Chhatra Sanmilan event in Tinsukia district. He had allegedly said that no one has been able to lay a hand on Assam because of ULFA.
Daimary also claimed the Moran and Matak communities played a significant role in shaping the leadership of the organisation.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee leader Mira Borthakur said the party has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to ask if ULFA remains a banned organisation.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified on Thursday that Daimary was referring to the pro-talks faction led by Anup Chetia. Sarma noted that this faction signed a peace agreement and is no longer banned, unlike the ULFA-Independent led by Paresh Baruah.
