Former Mauritius President calls for closer India-Mauritius cooperation

Prithvirajsing Roopun urged greater collaboration to address unemployment, inequality and brain drain during a function in Kottayam on Saturday.

Former President of Mauritius Prithvirajsing Roopun has advocated for increased cooperation between India and Mauritius to tackle issues including inequality, unemployment and brain drain, according to The Hindu.

Speaking at a function in Puthupally on Saturday to mark the 83rd birth anniversary of former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Roopun noted the historical links between the two nations.

Roopun highlighted similarities between Mauritius and Kerala, stating that both regions possess multi-racial societies living in harmony and high development indices.

He noted that in Mauritius, celebrations for Diwali and Christmas involve various communities, a culture he said Kerala also shares.

During the event, Roopun launched 'Vidyakiran', an initiative by the Oommen Chandy Foundation and the MGM Group of Institutions that offers free education to 100 school and college students annually.

Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan presented the Second Oommen Chandy Award to Roopun at the ceremony.
