HMWSSB to launch green tanker service in Hyderabad on November 1

The board will supply treated sewage water for non-potable uses through 21 tankers in the first phase.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will launch a green water tanker service on Sunday, November 1, to supply treated water from sewage treatment plants (STP) for non-potable purposes, according to The Hindu.

The initiative aims to conserve natural resources and reduce pressure on drinking water sources amid the impact of El Nino. In the first phase, 21 green tankers will supply treated water from 11 STPs across the city.

The STPs involved are located at Attapur, Amberpet, Mir Alam, Nagole, Mulkatva Cheruvu, Nalla Cheruvu, Hussain Sagar, Saroornagar, Kokapet, Gopanpally, and Lingamkunta. About 100 private water tankers have registered for the programme.

HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy said priority will be given to government departments, parks, and landscaping. The water will also be supplied to industries and construction sites.

Special officers have been appointed to monitor water quality, tanker allotment, supply, and activities at filling points. Each tanker must be painted green and prominently display the warning: ‘STP TREATED WATER – NOT FOR DRINKING’.

The board plans to expand the service to all divisions in phases. HMWSSB has appealed to residents and commercial establishments to use treated wastewater for non-potable requirements to help conserve drinking water.
