IIT-ISM student dies after falling from hostel floor in Dhanbad

A 21-year-old Petroleum Engineering student from Maharashtra died on Saturday after falling from an eighth-floor hostel building.

A final-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, died on Saturday, October 31, after falling from the eighth floor of a campus hostel, according to The Hindu and ThePrint.

The deceased, identified as 21-year-old Mane Rajkumar Pratik from Ahmedpur in the Latur district of Maharashtra, was enrolled in the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

IIT-ISM chief security officer Ram Manohar stated that the student was taken to Ashrafi Hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him.

Police officials have seized the student's mobile phone and are investigating the circumstances. One official noted that while no suicide note was found, the student had sent a long WhatsApp message to his parents, in which he reportedly sought forgiveness.

Ram Manohar said the management regularly organises counselling for students facing academic pressure, though there is no confirmation regarding depression in this case.

Dhanbad Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar said the body will undergo a post-mortem once the family arrives in Dhanbad.
