Kerala Police replace PRO system with citizen help desks at all stations
The new integrated Citizen Help Desks will serve as a single point of contact for the public at all police stations.
The Kerala Police have replaced the existing Public Relations Officer system with integrated Citizen Help Desks across all police stations, according to a statement on Saturday reported by the Hindustan Times.
These desks will manage all duties previously performed by Public Relations Officers, acting as a central contact for individuals lodging complaints, using digital services, or seeking assistance.
The help desks will facilitate complaint submissions and issue acknowledgements. They are designed to provide dedicated support to women, priority assistance to senior citizens, and appropriate consideration for transgender persons.
The service will also ensure accessible assistance for persons with disabilities and create a safe environment for children and their parents. Officials said the desks will handle matters regarding cybercrime, online fraud, and social media offences.
The desks will provide fundamental legal advice and refer visitors to legal aid centres when required. They will also assist with applications for No Objection Certificates, Accident General Diary entries, and Right to Information requests.
Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the decision in a Facebook post on Friday. The former chief minister argued the move could make it harder for ordinary people to approach the police and might reduce necessary human interaction.
