Bihar orders formal dress code for staff and bans DJ at schools

The Bihar education department has prohibited T-shirts and jeans for teaching and non-teaching staff in state-run institutions.

The Bihar education department has issued a directive banning T-shirts and jeans for teaching and non-teaching staff in all state-run schools and educational institutions. Education department director Vijay Kumar Pandey issued the order on October 30, 2026.

The notice also prohibits DJ setups, disco, and other activities described as vulgar or low-standard on school grounds. The department stated that only disciplined dance and music performances scheduled on designated days in the academic calendar are permitted.

According to the circular, staff members must wear dignified formal clothing while on duty and during office hours. The department noted that the use of casual wear and certain entertainment activities adversely impacts the academic environment.

The order referenced the formal dress codes used by the Supreme Court of India and the Patna high court to maintain institutional discipline. It stated that educators should mirror such decorum while shaping young minds.

District education heads have been instructed to monitor school premises to ensure total adherence to these rules. The directive for mandatory formal attire for all staff during official hours takes effect immediately.
