TGSPDCL warns farmers against illegal electric fencing after two students die

The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd warned that using galvanised iron wire for fencing is illegal and life-threatening.

The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (TGSPDCL) has appealed to farmers against installing illegal electric fencing. This follows the death of two engineering students who were electrocuted after accidentally coming into contact with fencing at Pedda Mangalaram village.

According to The Hindu, the two youths came into contact with electric fencing placed around the farm field of B. Penta Reddy. The incident occurred in survey number 330, outside Pedda Mangalaram village in the Chilkur section of Moinabad mandal.

The farmer had reportedly put up the fencing to protect his standing paddy crop from wild animals such as deers and boars. TGSPDCL authorities stated on Saturday that using galvanised iron (GI) wire for such purposes leads to life-threatening accidents.

The authorities said that electric fencing is an unauthorised and illegal act. They noted that it threatens the lives of both humans and animals.

TGSPDCL stated that such acts are punishable under Section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003 for theft of power. The authorities added that it is also punishable as a criminal act under Section 106 (1) of the BNS 2023.
