Tamil Nadu releases Rs 10.7 crore for urban livelihood mission

The funds will cover seven months of establishment expenditure and salaries for 681 staff members between September 2026 and March 2027.

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 10.7 crore to fund the Tamil Nadu Urban Livelihoods Mission (TNULM) for a seven-month period. According to The New Indian Express, the funds will cover costs from September 2026 to March 2027 to pay 681 employees and maintain operations in urban local bodies.

The municipal administration and water supply department issued an order on Friday stating that monthly costs are estimated at Rs 1.52 crore. The mission operates across 649 urban local bodies, assisting 1.71 lakh self-help groups (SHGs), 4,913 Area Level Federations, and 90 City Level Federations.

The mission also oversees 81 City Livelihood Centres and 7,748 group enterprises. This funding follows the central government withdrawing its financial support in October 2024, after previously sharing costs with the state in a 60:40 ratio.

While no financial allocation was made for TNULM in the revised budget estimates for 2026-27, the mission has several targets. These include facilitating Rs 13,750 crore in bank credit for 1.51 lakh urban SHGs and linking 3,500 SHG entrepreneurs to the MUDRA scheme for Rs 105 crore.

Other objectives involve forming 180 transgender groups for 1,000 people and reviving defunct groups. The state had previously provided Rs 12.74 crore for establishment costs.
