Hearings completed for 150 vendors following Vasco market fire

The scrutiny committee is reviewing compensation claims for 160 vendors affected by the blaze at the Modern Market.

The compensation process for vendors affected by the Modern Market fire in Vasco has progressed, with hearings completed for 150 of the 160 applicants, according to Urban Acres.

Mormugao deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate Pratap Gaonkar, who leads the scrutiny committee, said 10 applicants did not attend the hearing on Saturday. The committee is checking if these individuals missed hearing messages sent to the mobile numbers provided in their forms.

Vendors who attended the hearings provided documents such as photographs of the destroyed stalls and purchase receipts for materials and stock. Gaonkar told the Times of India that claims are being reviewed with an average value of approximately Rs 5 lakh per vendor, though this figure is not yet finalised and does not represent approved payouts.

South Goa collector Egna Cleetus visited the Mormugao Municipal Council building on Saturday and instructed the committee to categorise the gutted shops. Committee members are scheduled to inspect 20 shops at the Modern Market complex on Sunday or Monday to conduct site-based assessments.

The scrutiny committee is examining submitted documents and assessing the category of damaged commercial units. The final decision will determine the compensation amounts and which claims are included in the final list.
