Assam government begins eviction drive to clear land in Dhubri
The administration is working to clear 650 bighas of land from alleged encroachment in the Alamganj Part-9 area of Gauripur circle.
The Assam government launched an eviction drive on Sunday to clear 650 bighas, or nearly 215 acres, of land from alleged encroachment in Dhubri district, according to ThePrint.
Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath said the administration started the exercise this morning in Alamganj Part-9 of the Gauripur circle.
Nath stated that notices were sent to approximately 700 families regarding the encroachment of 800 bighas of land. He said 150 people living on around 150 bighas approached the court for relief, and because the matter is sub judice, the drive was not carried out on those specific lands.
The District Commissioner said the drive was launched on the remaining 650 bighas and noted that many families had already left voluntarily after receiving notices. He added that the exercise is underway peacefully with no resistance so far.
The district administration is using 50 excavators, tractor-trolleys, and other machinery to clear the area. Several thousands of civil and police personnel are providing support for the operation.
