Four workers die in Ujjain hotel waste chamber suffocation incident
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for each family of the deceased workers.
Four workers died after entering a waste chamber for cleaning at Shri Ganga Hotel on the Ujjain-Dewas road in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday night, according to The Hindu. The incident, which occurred around 10.30 p.m., involved an overground chamber containing leftover food and residual waste.
Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said the workers collapsed due to a gas leak and a slippery surface. He noted that the four individuals entered the tank without required protective gear. Three workers were hired externally for the cleaning task, while one was a hotel staff member.
Two other individuals who entered the chamber to rescue the workers fell ill and were admitted to the hospital for treatment. A fifth cleaner, Hemraj, also entered the chamber but managed to exit after experiencing dizziness and breathing difficulties, according to Hindustan Times.
The deceased have been identified as Wahid Khan, 29, Nitin Binarwan, 28, Kamlesh Tamboli, 30, and hotel supervisor Manoj Meena, 25. Police personnel and hotel staff sustained minor injuries while breaking open the chamber during rescue efforts.
Ujjain Collector Roshan Kumar Singh stated that the Ujjain Police and the Ujjain Municipal Corporation are probing the case. An official from the municipal corporation's health department said the hotel had not obtained a mandatory receipt from the civic body for the cleaning.
