Woman with disability dies in Korattur apartment fire
A 48-year-old woman died while her husband and son sustained burns during a fire at a Periyar Nagar residence on Sunday.
A 48-year-old woman with a disability died in a fire at her apartment in Periyar Nagar, Korattur, in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, according to The Hindu.
The deceased, identified as Akila, was unable to escape the blaze. Her husband, 55-year-old Ramani, and their son, 25-year-old Karthik, sustained burns while breaking open a door to flee the house.
Preliminary information suggests an air-conditioner and a refrigerator exploded as the fire spread through the home while the family of three was asleep. The refrigerator was reportedly faulty.
Korattur police suspect an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire. Residents alleged that the local power supply has been erratic, with frequent fluctuations between low and high voltage.
Personnel from the Korattur police and Fire and Rescue Services, assisted by local residents, rescued Ramani and Karthik and took them to a hospital. An investigation is underway to establish the exact cause.
