Telangana fixes maximum retail prices for fine rice in Hyderabad and Medchal
The government has set price ceilings for three rice varieties ranging from ₹66 to ₹79 per kg to prevent overcharging.
The Telangana government has fixed maximum retail prices for three varieties of fine rice in Hyderabad and Medchal, according to a report by Urban Acres.
The price ceilings were established after rates in and around the city exceeded ₹80 per kg. The maximum price for BPT or KNM rice is ₹66 per kg, while RNR or Telangana Sona is capped at ₹74 per kg. HMT or JSR rice has a ceiling of ₹79 per kg.
Hyderabad’s Chief Rationing Officer has instructed rice mills, wholesale markets, and retail stores to display these prices prominently on banners. These banners must also include the company name at the bottom to help officials and consumers identify the stock source.
Civil Supplies officials will monitor compliance through inspections and take action against those selling above the notified rates. The department has also warned against illegal hoarding of foodgrains or creating artificial shortages.
The government stated these measures aim to establish clear retail ceilings as consumers faced higher prices for common grades. Officials noted that old rice stocks currently dominate inventories and prices should not increase abnormally.
